Medical Informatics, Medicine
Program Description:
Medical Informatics first emerged as a new field to apply computer technology to medicine. It then developed further to extend its applications to other fields like decision science, information science, management science, cognitive science, and organizational and social sciences.
The first organization for informatics was developed by a German scientist Gustav Wagner in 1949. For the first time, during the 1960s, the term Medical Informatics (Informatique Medicale) was coined by French scientists. This was the time when specialized university departments and training programs for Medical Informatics were developed in some of the European countries such as France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium. Later, during the 1970s, Medical Informatics units and departments were also developed in Poland and the US. The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) was founded in 1980 to provide support for this emerging discipline. The International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) is an independent organization established under Swiss Law in 1989 in order to play a major global role in the application of Information Technology in the fields of healthcare and medical practice and research. Since 2001, young Iranian scholars have been sent abroad, mainly Canada, Sweden, The Netherlands, and Australia, to officially learn this new discipline of science. In 2003, in America, the famous report of the Institute of Medicine “Crossing the quality chasm” further highlighted the importance of this discipline by introducing the application of Health Information Technology as a way to alleviate the growing problems in the quality of current medical practice.
Definition:
The field of Medical Informatics is an interdisciplinary area of science dealing with the design, development, adoption and application of information and communication technology innovations in healthcare practice, health care management, and planning. It also deals with the organization of healthcare information, clinical decision-making, medical knowledge management and discovery, and evaluation of the impact of information technology on medical research, education, and patient care.
Objectives:
With a growing need and new demands for the application of Medical Informatics knowledge on the one hand, and the return of first graduates from Canada and Europe, on the other, Medical Informatics was established as a PhD course by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education of the I.R. Iran in 2009. The main objectives were to meet the growing needs of the health care system and to disseminate and internalize the discipline’s knowledge through training and educating specialized taskforce. The mission is to build a bridge between relevant disciplines of science, such as Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, and Organizational Science on the one hand, and Medical Science on the other, in order to benefit from the advantages of the interdisciplinary cooperation.

Medical Parasitology, Medicine
Program Description:
PhD degree in Medical Parasitology is the highest level of education and is an old field dealing with parasitic animal species, mostly living in or on the human body and causing infections or diseases which are dangerous for human health and life. Some of the parasites cause zoonotic diseases.
Medical Parasitology is an old discipline focusing on parasitic diseases studied by scientists and researchers. Avicenna, about one thousand years ago, observed a number of parasites in the human body. He described some of them (such as worms) which were visible by naked eyes. Avicenna also noted signs of some parasitic diseases whose agents were not visible at that time. Parasitic diseases are important among other infectious diseases because despite many efforts to combat them, they are still causing mortality and irreparable difficulties in human societies worldwide.
Several studies were performed in various areas of parasitic diseases by using new technologies and advanced sciences such as taxonomy, immunology, biochemistry, epidemiology, biotechnology, pharmacology and genetics. They helped identify parasites, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and control of some parasitic diseases and illustrate the importance of a number of parasitic diseases including immergence and reemergence diseases. The widespread scientific progress in the field of parasitic diseases entails the need for developing educational programs and training PhD graduates in Medical Parasitology in the country. Training specialists who will contribute to health research is also of prime importance in this program.
The mission of this PhD program is to train experts and specialists in basic medical sciences. The graduates will perform activities and give services to promote scientific research and education in Medical Parasitology. Moreover, they endeavor to promote human health by removing the harms caused by parasites.
The graduates of this program will be able to use the most recent achievements, in science and related fields in Medical Parasitology, for training and research programs, health services and laboratory activities. They will be able to use their knowledge, skills and creativity in solving problems in the field and for identifying parasites, parasitic agents, and laboratory diagnosis, prevention and control of diseases caused by parasites.
The aims of the program are:
- Training specialists, researchers and teachers to teach, conduct research studies and provide services in the field of Medical Parasitology in medical universities, institutions of higher education, and research centers in the country

Molecular Medicine, Medicine
Program Description:
Although the concept of molecular medicine was introduced in 1949, a great deal of developments in this filed, especially in European and American countries, has taken place during recent years. Bearing in the mind the strategic significance of this area of knowledge, a considerable number of universities worldwide grant scholarships annually to students of this field of study. Iranian universities inaugurated Molecular Medicine in 2007 and due to the urgent escalating need for graduates of molecular medicine each year, an increasing number of universities receive students in this major. Molecular medicine, as an interdisciplinary field of study, contributes to understanding the molecular basis of the etiology and mechanisms of diseases and various disorders along with fundamental and heuristic research on different areas of diseases including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Dissemination of the science of molecular medicine through a blend of education and clinical research emphasizing active learning and up-to-date research will significantly contribute to the expansion of the borders of medicine and eventually improvement of health in society.
Among the values of the field are practicing creativity and innovation to analyze lessons learned and research to utilize molecular medicine findings to solve problems related to public health. In this regard, graduates focus on social justice and human equality, the rights of patients, regardless of age, sex, color, race, culture and religion and any activity would be with regard to the protection of human dignity. In the next ten years, Molecular Medicine graduates will be able to expand the frontiers of knowledge in the field of Molecular Medicine in the region and improve the country's ranking in this area to the top by taking advantage of the integration of basic and clinical research activities, while establishing and promoting the discipline in the scientific community. This program aims to educate knowledgeable, capable, and committed people at the Ph.D. level. Graduates will be able to design and lead medical research at cellular and molecular levels.
